2027 set for shorter races

NEWS STORY
04/09/2026

Due to anticipated fuel use next season, the teams have agreed to have race distances being shortened.

In a bid to curb the energy 'starvation' witnessed at some events this season, for 2027 fuel flow rates are to be increased.

Understandably, this will result in the need for more fuel, which - other than a return to in-race refuelling - would require larger fuel tanks.

This, of course, would require a redesign of the cars, which, with an eye on the budget cap, the teams were unwilling to do since they want available funds to upgrade their cars, many of which will be basically carried over, rather than go for a complete new design.

Consequently, it was proposed that race distances at some of the more fuel demanding events, which faced the threat of becoming economy runs, be reduced, however this raised fears of a variation in race distances over the course of the season.

As a result, the teams have agreed to a basic, standard race distance throughout the year, which will see the current upper limit of 305km (189 miles) reduced to around 290km (180 miles), which is widely anticipated to constitute around 3 laps.

The proposal will go to the F1 Commission, which comprises the teams, the FIA and FOM, and once approved will require ratification by the World Motor Sport Council.

At present the move is only intended for 2027.

"2026 regs and the multiple band-aids and patchwork being done by these clowns is like watching someone paint themselves into a corner and then proceed to scoot their ar*e across the floor like a dog towards the door."

"Soon all we will have is the sprint races.
They will not stop at 2027.
Get rid of the battery to make room for more fuel."
